Appearance by Calista Jessey DuBay at Indian Agency House

Background:
The land next to the Indian Agency, on Indian Agency Road, where Pauquette first lived (he then moved across to the fort, was first purchased by John Baptiste DuBay (Dube'), then given in contract by Joseph Rolette dated 1840, as Metis (French/Menomonee) he was also simply an heir.  After the fort shut down the land was divided up and sold with the exception of DuBay's land which he posted Not for Sale.  The Fox-Wisconsin Waterway's had failed to complete the canal in a timely manner, went bankrupt and hired two guys previously from California who said they had ways to getting that land.... They finally devised a plot to build on DuBay's land while he was away, planned how to get him away, then built a structure while Calista was home alone.  When G, G Uncle John arrived home he was furious as the story includes much tension, bullying, threats, etc......lawyers (Strong & Orton) made him sign over 160 acres prior to trial beginning...

Mission: To tell the human side of what transpired in the first attempts at building a canal on the Fox across from the Indian Agency and the Trading Post & Log Home.

The Mission of Calista Jessey is to have the Log House & Trading Post reconstructed for the benefit not only for telling history in a more balanced manner - visually, in this case -  and for the benefit of the people of Portage who in 1857 failed to stand up against the unfolding tragedy yet whose descendants after hearing the story and understanding the tremendous courage of this well-known romantic figure, one of the wealthiest frontiersmen in the Wisconsin Territory left Portage never to return will now stand up to make right what was taken.  Rebuilding this history will help to focus attention on Portage as a tourist destination.  The trading post can be updated to a Coffee House with windows over looking nature, sell Wisconsin made products and help to build a relationship between the Agency and their neighbors.
