A father and son’s 1,000 mile journey to help Veterans
Raising funds to benefit Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors
On June 16th Casey and Carson Barfels will depart Lake Itasca State Park, Minnesota via the Mississippi River and begin their 1000 mile journey by canoe back to their home in Appleton, WI. The trip is being used as a third party fund raising event for Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors. Casey has set a fund raising goal of $100,000. The trip is estimated to take 37 days. They have obtained monetary and equipment sponsorship from many different companies. Donations are submitted via the Voyageforvets.com website and goes directly to the Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors.
Casey, 43, is a former US Army and Iowa Army National Guard member. He has been on two overseas deployments, the last being to Iraq with the C 2/211 Medevac unit from 2008-2009. He has been planning this trip for over a year.
Carson, 11, is an active Boy Scout and will be one week out of the sixth grade when the trip begins.
The trip will follow the Mississippi River to Prairie du Chien, WI. While in MN they have been invited to stay at Camp Ripley where Casey has spent time in the ARNG for training. At Prairie du Chien they will begin the upstream paddle on the Wisconsin River to Portage, WI. While in Portage they have been invited by The Daughters of the American Revolution to visit The Fort Winnebago Surgeon quarters. After crossing the 2 mile land bridge at Portage, they will take the Fox River the rest of the way to Lutz Park in Appleton. There will be two resupply points during the trip and various stays with friends including military acquaintances and other outdoor enthusiasts that have offered a place to land.
